Conduct a shared or independent read of your chosen Giglets text.
Arrange pupils so that they are facing each other in two concentric circles; one half of the class will form an inside circle, and the other half will form an outside circle.
Present pupils with a topic matter, such as a question or dilemma, that challenges them to think about a character or event in the text. You may use the Question Creation Chart to support with this.
Allow pupils around 20 seconds to independently gather their thoughts about the question or dilemma posed.
On your signal (for example, starting the music), ask pupils in the inside circle to share their thoughts and ideas with the partner they face.
Give a second signal (for example, stopping the music), and ask pupils in the inside circle to finish their sentence, allowing their partners in the outside circle to begin sharing responses.
After about one minute, give a third signal (for example, shaking a tambourine) and ask the outside circle to move one step to the left. The process is repeated again and again until your pupils have had the opportunity to speak to multiple peers.
Once finished, encourage pupils to make notes about what they have heard in the ‘doughnut’. They might note ideas that they agreed with, disagreed with or want to discuss further.
