Taking another road

A creative follow up to this task would be to consider if the story had gone a different direction. Create a new road on the story map and then follow up with a creative writing session.

Act it out

Using completed story maps, encourage pupils to act out the story to, or including, friends or family. They may wish to add character quotes to their maps as a support. Provide pupils with space and time to rehearse, edit and refine their performance before taking it to the class audience. Encourage positive comments about each performance and make suggestions before giving them time to refine it further. You may wish to have the theme music from the text playing in the background while pupils act out!

Build a soundscape

Encourage pupils to create a soundscape, exploring appropriate sounds using a range of instruments or objects that will enhance the storytelling experience. Pupils can work together and consider how they might change the tempo, pitch or volume at every plot turn.

Picture books

Have pupils use their story maps to create picture books or comic strips. Before starting, you may wish to revisit the text as a class and use the shared highlighting tool to discuss key dialogue, words or phrases that should be emphasised. Encourage pupils to include these within their story maps and books or comic strips. Pupils may design a new front illustration too, before reading their books or comic strips to audiences in other classes.
