This activity requires your pupils 'remove the rubble' from what they have written.

Read a text on Giglets either individually, in groups or as a whole class.
Provide your pupils with the whole text or a piece of the text. Alternatively, ask your pupils to write about the text, for example, 'You have 10 minutes to write as much as you know/have learned about the Solar System.'
Explain to your pupils that the core aim of the activity is to remove any unnecessary words or ‘the rubble’, reducing the passage down as much as possible whilst maintaining the key facts or events.
The teacher might first model the activity using a familiar story or previously read text.
When pupils have reduced the ‘rubble’ in their text, they can share and compare this with their peers.
A natural extension of this activity is to list the points that remain in a hierarchy of importance (or diamond nine) and use the remaining points to write a cohesive text summary.
