Questioning

"Knowledge is having the right answer.
Intelligence is asking the right question."

Effective questioning is an essential skill for a teacher. It is a natural part of teaching and learning and can help to keep pupils active and engaged.

Effective questioning can:

  • highlight whether or not a pupil has understood what they have been reading or learning;

  • illustrate that a pupil has not grasped a key concept or information;

  • help you identify pupils who may be able to decode or ‘read’ a passage, but then cannot talk or write about what they have read; and

  • enable you to improve comprehension through posing carefully targeted questions.
