Pupil Highlighting

Highlighting or text marking when reading is an important skill to practise. It allows a pupil to interact with a text and can be a good indicator of comprehension and understanding. Many teachers encourage highlighting in paper-based passages, and pupils can highlight Giglets texts too.

Prompts for Highlighting

Highlight words, phrases or sentences that:

  • you agree or disagree with;

  • tell us what the character looks like;

  • describe how the character feels;

  • tell us what the character did;

  • make you want to ask the character a question;

  • are relating to the five senses;

  • utilise various verb tenses (present, past, future)

  • follow spelling rules or patterns (e.g. doubling the last letter when adding -ing, changing 'y' to 'ies' for plural);

  • surprise you;

  • you knew already;

  • identify different parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, connectives);

  • are speech;

  • say something positive or negative about the character;

  • are well-known or lesser-known facts;

  • provide insights into the habitat, appearance, or lifecycle of an animal;

  • describe aspects of the landscape, food, culture, language, or religion of a country.
